Lincoln is an interesting movie because it is very good, well-paced, filled with amazing actors and performances, and deeply serious in a way that I really appreciate. For a movie that came out 14 years ago, it feels like it comes from an era of sincerity. The film begins with Lincoln talking to soldiers as an almost mythical figure, and it ends with his death, saying goodbye to him as he walks out of the White House and effectively off the stage of history. That structure makes the movie feel very touching. It feels romantic and pro-American in a way that I do not think recent movies have really tried to approach. I am glad that I was able to watch it as part of my American history series.
